Ans) Nursing care for a child with respiratory failure:

- Maintain patent airway

- Monitor respiratory status
Stay in or be close to the room

Maintain safe administration of oxygen
- Too much oxygen cause cause neonate to become blind - retinopathy of the newborn
- May need flow vs. high concentration of oxygen

- Position for maximal chest excursion

- Reduce temperature if elevated
- Resp. Disorders will increase metabolic demand, increase HR, and increase temperature
- Will infant is cold/stressed they will go apneic

- Maintain hydration

- Encourage rest

- Administer prescribed medications

- Minimize spread of infection

- Reduce anxiety

- Maintain ventilation and maximize oxygen

- Correct hypoxemia and hypercapnia

- Treat the underlying cause

- Minimize organ failure

- Provide specific therapy to control oxygen demands

- Anticipate complications
