G tube is also called as Gastrostomy tube that is inserted in to the abdomen to induce nutrition supplements directly in to the stomach.This is mostly used in children's.

J tube is a plastic tube placed through the abdomen in to the small intestines to deliver the food.

G-J Tube is a Gastrostomy Jejunostomy tube which is placed in to the child stomach and also small intestines.This can be used to draw out air from the stomach and also to deliver the food.

Placement :

G tube : Placed in to the stomach

J tube : Placed in to the intestines.

Purposes: Both the tubes can used for feeding.

G tube : Can be used for feeding, administering drugs , helping in meeting nutritional requirements who cannot take by mouth.Can also be used to relieve gases and gastric drainage.

J tube : This can also be used for providing medications and nutrients.

Things that can be administered via tube :

Food, Drugs, Water

Potential complications :

Formation of translation tissue

Itching , pain and irritation in the area.

Nursing Interventions

  • Assess the site of the insertion
  • Check for the infection or inflammation
  • Check for irritation, redness or pain
  • Make sure the child is getting adequate nutrients
  • Maintain hygiene of the tubes
