The comfort theory : An analysis
The theory of comfort by katharine kolcaba was first developed in the 1990s. It is a middle-range theory for health practice, education, and research. This theory has the potential to place comfort in the forefront of healthcare. It explains comfort as a fundamental need of all human beings for relief, ease, or transcendence arising from health care situations that are stressful. Comfort can enhance health-seeking behaviours for patients, family members, and nurses. According to the model, comfort is an immediate desirable outcome of nursing care.
As a coin has two sides all the theory will have it s own pros and corns. So there are some identified strengths and weakness for the comfort theory as well. Those are as follows.
|
· The theory is constantly expanding to new disciples of nursing, so it is applicable to the modern nursing.
· It uses observable variables that are easily measured by the nurse.
· Since it is not an abstract theory, it can also be applied to oncology, radiation therapy and end-of- life nursing practices.
· It requires only a simple, common sense approach. The comforting interventions enhance patient’s comfort.
· The theory can be used in an educational environment in comforting the learner.
· It can be implemented in any health filed by any member of health care team.
|
· This can be used as a guideline to enhance the comfort of nurses and improve the practice environment in reality.
· The adequate staffing is difficult to achieve as there is an increase in nurse- patient ratio. Thereby increasing the discomfort in working environments.
· The hospital administrators have to balance the resources and the budget.
