Monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes are involved in the metabolism of catecholamines. They oxidize the amines and remove the amine group. The two types of MAO are MAO-A, and MAO B. Both the MAO A and MAO B are found in the central nervous system. Outside the CNS, the MAO-A is present in the GIT, vascular endothelium of the lungs, liver, and placenta. MAO B enzyme is present in the platelets.
The primary substrates of MAO-A are serotonin, adrenaline, noradrenaline, and melatonin. The substrates of MAO B are benzylamine and phenethylamine.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (e.g.: selegiline, phenelzine) or MAOIs inhibit the metabolism of monoamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin) by the “monoamine oxidase” enzyme. This increases their availability at the nerve terminals and thus, increase the transmission. MAOIs are generally prescribed in the treatment of depression and Parkinson’s disease.
