- Yet, despite increased awareness of the problem, nurses to this day continue to experience increasing levels of stress.

- According to the American Holistic Nurses’ Association, nurses are experiencing workplace stress at higher rates than most other professions.

- These stressors include:

• physical demands

• management issues

• lack of resources

• difficulty balancing home and work responsibilities

• long shifts of 12 or more hours often lead to exhaustion and stress.

• In addition, nurses must deal with human suffering on a daily basis. Nursing requires a high level of vigilance to assure patient safety in an environment that is complex and may even be chaotic.

These are some things that are positively or negatively affecting the needs of nurses staying or leaving their job.
