HEEADSSS mnemonic

The HEEADSSS screening tool is an enhancement of the social history in adolescent care visits that typically is obtained after the family history and before the review of systems. The mnemonic stands for:

H - Home

E - Education and employment

E - Eating disorder screening

A - Activities

D - Drugs

S - Sexuality

S - Suicide risk and depression

S - Safety (fights, car, weapons)

Example of adolescent concerns for each issue :-

Home - want privacy at home

Education and employment - will I be able to crack examination and get government jobs

Eating disorders - bulimia nervosa ,will I be overweight and obese

Activities - wants to be part of adventurous activities ,will that make me called crazy

Drugs - will be addicted to drugs like cocaine , heroine if i use it

Sexuality - will i get some viral infections if i indulge in sex

Suicide /depression - is suicide the best option to overcome our drawbacks and failure .

Safety - how safe i am in the present community
