Tom and Jessica are best friends, but they couldn’t be more different when it comes to their diets. Tom spends a lot of time in the gym surrounded by body builders and has adopted a very protein-heavy diet, complemented by small amounts of vegetables and a vitamin/mineral supplement, which he now sells. Jessica has never liked the taste of meat and is now a vegan who eats only organic foods. She believes in a sustainable lifestyle and her vegan diet reflects that belief. Tom believes that Jessica would be healthier and have more energy if she would just use the vitamin/mineral supplement that he sells. He believes that his supplement provides the energy in his very low carbohydrate diet and is a good substitute for whole grains and fruit. He points to his body-building magazines as proof that his diet is healthy. Jessica’s family has always embraced a vegetarian, although not vegan, lifestyle. She believes that Tom’s lifestyle is not very healthy and provides him with information from several nutritional research studies on the importance of all food groups to good health. •

Question 1: Compare and contrast the sources that Tom and Jessica are using to support their positions that one diet is better than the other using the steps and procedures in scientific method. Support your answer with data, facts, key terminology, specific examples and other information drawn from the textbook and at least one other supplemental source.

1, Very high protein diet that Tom consumes causes weight gain. gym person needs protein for their body function, reduces weight and repair muscle and organs and bone strength, but eating a heavy protein diet causes health issues like kidney damage, cancer risk, and heart disease. these are macronutrients can be plant-based diet according to research. the small amount of vitamin, mineral should be a short term measure. long term use of these supplements causes toxicity. vitamin and minerals supplements remove stress and provide good sleep, it also prevents common cold and heart disease. Food resources have the same effects as supplements. USDA recommended we should eat five to nine servings of vegetables and fruits every day. when she is going to the gym she needs natural proteins to increase muscle mass. complex carbohydrates help them to produce energy, small protein molecules regulate insulin level and reduce inflammation after the workout.
- The vegan diet has rich nutrients help reduce weight, blood sugar level and avoid cancer risk, heart disease, arthritis. It is plant-based foods, it avoids animal products that have an important source of unsaturated fat, protein, vitamin, iron, and minerals. Jessica will be lacking for all these nutrients as she follows a vegan diet and has a sustainable lifestyle. she has to find some alternatives to consume these sources. It is possible for them to stay well normally by taking supplements that have whole grains for their body function. vegan supplements like vitamin B-12, iron, omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K12, zinc, iodine. her family follows a vegetarian lifestyle so they avoid meat, fish and milk products that are important for our body. Vegetarian and vegan diet help to lower the health risk but they lack additional sources that need for our body function.
