CASE STUDY #6: Sylvia Sneed Sylvia Sneed is a 54-year-old female, 5'2", 110 lb, blonde, and fair-skinned. She has discovered a history of osteoporosis in her family and comes to the clinic to see if she has it or is going to "come down with it." She has two children in their early 20s not living at home Her vital signs are normal. The height listed on her driver's license, issued 6 years ago, is 5'3- 1/2". She is a well-nourished, perimenopausal female. She reports smoking for about 5 years, from her late teens to her early 20s; she's never been a big milk drinker, works in an office, and is too tired when she comes home to exercise regularly. She reports menarche at age 15% years, with her last menstrual period 3 months ago, “but they have been messed up for the last year." Mrs. Sneed performs monthly breast self-examinations, which have been negative, and her yearly mammograms are also negative. She recently located her birth father and found a history of osteoporosis in three aunts (fractured hips in their early 60s) and 3" loss of height in her father by age 70 years. This has caused her to be very anxious about her future well-being, as well as the future health of her daughters. Brief Details of the Case Study

Sylvia Sneed visited hospital in concern to the family history of osteoporosis.

2. Objective Data :

Age : 54 years , In Americans over age 50 osteoporosis is the most common and females are more prone to risk.

Height and Weight : Sylvia height is 5.2" where as weight is 110 lbs , this is actually not much risky for Sylvia. The only risky thing is height which is 5'3" 6 years ago in driving licence.

Personal History :

Habits : Smoker for over 5 years.Cigarette smoking is the highest risk factor for many years, which effects bone density and also one of the leading cause for fractures.

No habit of drinking milk.

Menstrual History :

Menarche attained at 15.5 years of age and menopause in 54 years that is recently 3 months ago. This leads to alteration in levels of oestrogen in turn developing bone loss.

Family History :

History of hip fractures in 60's due to osteoporosis for father.

3 Aunts with osteoporosis

Systematic Examination :

Mammograms are negative.

In addition to this Sylvia fear and anxiety is one of the concerns.

3. Subjective Data :

This is in concern with Sylvia self assessment.

Sylvia assessment concerns are

• Fear of having osteoporosis and also occurrence of the same further to the next generation that is for her 2 children.
• She is suffering from hypochondriasis , fearing that she might be suffering from osteoporosis as like her father.
• Sylvia states that she is 5.2 and also she is expecting to loose her height as like her father.
• Also family history of osteoporosis including her father with her aunts is one of her concern.
• Her Habitual patterns of Smoking not never having milk.
• She had breast self examination and mammograms as patients with breast cancer develops osteoporosis.
• Her driving licence shows height of 5'3"where as now it is 5'2 " which is her major concern as like her father.

All the assessments shows clearly that she is prone to osteoporosis.
