A 78-year-old mother has just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. The daughter told the nurse that she and her brother had questions regarding this condition.

Q.1 WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS ?

ANS- Osteoporosis is a bone disease when bones become weak due to costant absorbation of bone tissue and new bone does not formation in replace of old bone .

ANS-Common symptoms is weight loss and some times bone fracture.so many time it has been no symptoms and no signs.it is devlops very slowly some time due minor harm may be chance of bone fracture.

Q.3 Are there any medical tests or labs that are done to help confirm the diagnosis?

Ans-NO lab test for dignossis to osteoporosis .To cofirm this diagnosis take family history and any risk factor.

if suspected then plan for BMD (bone mineral density scan) .

note- BMD scan is a scaning uses of dual energy x ray absorptiometry (DEXA).

DEXA can help to moniter to a client and their response to tretment.

Q.4 Are there any medications used to treat this condition? I heard Fosamax is used frequently for patients with osteoarthritis. Can you tell us about the purpose, side effects, correct way to take the medication and route of Fosamax?

ANS- medication's are availabel for slow bone loss and reduce the fracture risk e.g--Bisphosphonate,fosamax etc.

for 78 year old mother tab predisolone (corticosteroid) is the best drug choice .othewise fosamax cane take as per doctor advice.but i sugest fosamax d3 is beter than fosamax becuse it has contain the combination of alendronate and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). alendronate slow the bone loss and cholecalciferol absorbe the calcium in body for help to buld bone.

side effect may be occure like stomach pain ,constipation, diarrhoea, nousea,if any condition persist then immidiately contact with a physician.

This medication has to be taken orally complelty swallo in empty stomach in morning with a full glass of water and wait for 30 minute for taking food and in 30 minutes never lye down try to move in standing position.

Q.5 Does exercise and diet make a difference with this condition?

ANS - EXERCISE-IN that case exersice is good for strengthen your bone and also improve posture and balance.but exercise should be waight bearing otherwise fracture may occur.

DIET- diet should be enough calcium and vitamine D food and low in salt.try to take fresh whole grains, fruits and vegitabels.avoid  caffeine and carbonate drinks.

Q.6-Are there any safety considerations when one has osteoporosis?

ANS-IF any body affect osteoporosis try to avoid fall , any harmfull event and heavy weight lifting becuse chance of fracture is there.consume adicuate amount of calcium and vitamine d and corticosteroid therapy if old age.exercise to be done several times a week.
