1.The discharge teaching plan for postpartum women and their families are

  • Breastfeeding
    • Teach about the techniques of holding ,frequency and length of feed shoukd be 10 to 15 minutes on each side every second hourly and not exceeding three hours
    • Burp the baby after each feed to relieve any gas and prevent colicky abdomen
    • No pacifiers ,it is good to avoid it
    • Cleanse the breast nipple area with wet clean cloth to remove any dirt and hard discharge stuck to ensure free flow of milk
    • Wear supportive bra
  • Perineal hygiene ,dressing
    • The mother should have a good perineal hygiene and apply antimicrobial ointment in case of normal delivery suture like episiotomy
    • Dressing has to be kept dry in case of cesarean
  • Diet
    • Adequate fluids
    • Balanced and nutritional diet
    • Eating before feeling hungry
    • Do not skip meals
    • Calcium ,multivitamin supplements to be taken as per order
  • Exercise
    • Rest for atleast 6 weeks then can start mild exercise as per order under post natal exercise for ceasarean cases
  • Umblical cord care
    • It will dry and fall off in 5 to 7 days
    • Monitor for discharge, swelling and report to healthcare professionals for help
  • Bowel and bladder pattern
    • May pass urine and stool as per the intake ,there can be 1 or even 8 pr more bowel movements all are normal.Similarly they may pass urine more than 6 to 8 times a day
    • The first stool will be greenish black
    • As the baby grows old by days and with good feed the color of stool turns pale yellow or in normal color
  • Baby bath
    • Can be bathed at any time of day time
    • Use Luke warm water to bath
    • Can use baby lotions and oils
    • Avoid dusting powder
  • Vaccination
    • The baby will be vaccinated with BCG,Hepatitis B, BCG and the follow up vaccination as to be taken as prr schedule
  • General
    • Keeping environment clean and tidy
    • Clean hands before preparing any feeds,touching the baby
    • Do not take newborn to extreme crowded placed
    • Daily sunlight exposure in the ,morning is needed to enhance the vitamin D secretion
