In a cohort study of elderly patients (70 years of age and older), 1000 people with diabetes and 1500 people without diabetes were studied to evaluate whether diabetes is a risk factor for dementia. Participants were followed for 5 years. Of the diabetics, 380 developed dementia. Of the non-diabetics, 110 development dementia. Set up 2x2 table for this information and calculate the crude measure of association.

Answer #1

From 1000 people with Diabetes 380 developed dementia. From 1500 people without diabetes 110 development dementia

Dementia No mental illness
Diabetes 380 (a) 620 (b)
No Diabetes 110 (c) 1390 (d)

A crude measure of the association will be

(a \div (a+b)) / (c \div (c+d))

= 0.38 / 0.073

= 5.2

So, Risk ratio is 5.2 .

That means Diabetic people have 5 times more risk of developing Dementia than Non-Diabetic people

    1. A cohort study was undertaken to examine the association between high lipid level and coronary heart disease. Participants were classified as having either a high lipid level (exposed) or a low or normal lipid level (unexposed). Because age is associated with both lipid level and risk of heart disease, age was considered a potential confounder, and the age of each subject was recorded. Question 43 In a study of breast cancer, a mother was considered exposed if she first gave birth at 30 years of age or older. Among 1,628 mothers who were exposed, 31 subsequently developed breast cancer. Among the 4,450 mothers who first gave birth before the age of 30, 65 subsequently developed breast cancer. What type of study design was used for this investigation of the association age at first birth and breast cancer? Prospective cohort study Retrospective cohort study Case-control study Clinical trial None of...

In a study of 380 diabetics and nondiabetics, patients were classified as underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese according to their diabetes status. The probability of being normal weight is 0.31 and the probability of having diabetes is 0.39. If you select two individuals from the population, the probability of being diabetic and normal weight is 0.09. What is the probability that either of the two randomly selected individuals (or both) will be diabetic or normal weight? a. Pr (diabetic...

A prospective study of Norwegian women who were followed between 1986 and 2009 was conducted. Within that period (1995-2005), a national mammography program was gradually implement ed, with biennial invitations send to women age 50-69. The participants of the study were all women aged 50-79 between 1986-2009. The mortality rate ratios compared women who were invited to screen to those who were not invited, with a clear distinction between cases of breast cancer diagnosed before and after the invitation to...

Lung Cancer & Smoking Case Study A causal relationship between cigarette smoking and lung cancer was first suspected in the 1920s on the basis of clinical observations. To test this apparent association, numerous epidemiologic studies were undertaken between 1930 and 1960. Two studies were conducted by Richard Doll and Austin Bradford Hill in Great Britain The first was a case-control study begun in 1947 comparing the smoking habits of lung cancer patients with the smoking habits of other patients. The...
