Case Scenario 1 :-

Osteoarthritis ( OA) is the most common chronic degenerative condition of the Joints, affecting appropriately 27 million Americans ( Arthritis Foundation, 2016). OA can affect any joint, but it occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back and neck, small joints of fingers and bases of the thumb and big toe. In normal joints, a firm, rubbery material called cartilage covers the end of each bone. Cartilage provides a smooth, gliding surface for joint motion and acts as a cushion between the bones ( Arthritis Foundation , 2016) . In OA, their is slow degeneration and progressive loss of articular cartilage accompanied by synovial and bony proliferation and sclerosis of the subchondral bone leading to pain, loss of joint mobility, compromised joint function and reduced quality of life ( Huether & McCance, 2017). As a result of damage caused by the cartilage breakdown, the body responds with an inflammatory process where cytokines and enzymes develop that further damage the cartilage ( Huether & McCance 2017).
