Thimothy's weight categorization

Weight: 31 kg.

Height: 127 cm

BMI : 19.25

Thimothy's Body mass index for age is 19.2 at 95th percentile in growth chart. This indicates that his weight is coming under obese category.

Thimothy's weight indicates that he is an obese child. This information and Thimothy's daily routine really  gives much concern not only to his mother but any health worker, who knows the adverse effects of Childhood Obesity.  

Obesity is a state of being obese due to an excess of body fat. weight Childhood Obesity is a serious condition which leads to various other co- morbidities like Diabetes Mellitus, hyperlipidemia etc. The main risk factors of Childhood are genetic factors, unhealthy eating patterns, inadequate physical activity or may be due to some hormonal conditions. Thimothy's case history shows that he is at risk for Obesity as his mother is an obese person. But the unhealthy eating patterns and lack of physical activity are very much evident, that really gives the concern.

Childhood Obesity affected approximately 13 million children in Us. Childhood Obesity put the children into the risk of various chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, Diabetes Mellitus, abnormal bone growth, musculoskeletal problems and also causes psychological stress in children. This may affect the quality of life of children.

Recommendations to Thimothy's mother:

Express your concern to his mother and Encourage her that she and her husband can manage the child 's health, if they put a little effort to attend the child as the early diagnosis can help the initiation of interventions to control child's weight.  

Tips for the mother ( explain to her the causes and effects of Childhood Obesity, as mentioned above):

* Family should have a balanced diet according to My Plate guidelines. ( Inclusion of whole grains, vegetables and fruits in the diet)

* Encourage physical activity such as out door games and sports activity at least half an hour daily.

* Discourage gaming behaviours, video games, it has a harmful effect for both physically and psychologically.

* Discourage frequent snacking, resrict extra money to spend on snacks and sofy drinks. Discourage the use of vending machine.

* Encourage for veggies snacks and adequate drinking of water.

* Don't give food or snacks while watching TV or computer .

* Include the children while buying vegetables and fruits and also in preparation of diet and food items.  

* Add lean meat and fish in the diet, reduce oily fried items.
