Vit D(calciterol)is an essential vitamin whose main function is calcium absorption.Also it helps in proper functioning of nervous, muscular,immune system of our body.

Vit D deficiency causes RICKETS in children,a condition in which the bones become soft and fragile which make then easy to bend.

In adults the deficiency leads to OSTEOMALACIA, which is chatacterizec by weak bones with bone pain as well as muscule wealness.

Pathophysiology

Vit D deficiency cause decrease in bone density caused by demineralization of bones thus making it soft and easy to break.

25 hydroxy vit D is the inactive form of vit D which needs to be converted to 125 hydroxy vit D (active form) to be taken up by the body to perform its functions.Kidney helps in the conversion.In case of any renal disease this conversation is not taking place resulting in vit D deficiency.Intestines are the organs where Vit D absorption takes place.In case of any intestinal disorders malabsorption of vitD takes place which finally causes decreased Calcium absorption.

Hypocalcemia as a result of vitD deficiency will cause increased production of osteoclasts (responsible for bone matrix breakdown).As a result of this demineralization of bone secondary hyperparathyroidism is triggered ,which is a normal response of the body to increase calcium levels.This is done by increasing uptake of calcium away from bones thereby resulting in osteoporosis..and finally bone fracture.
