1 THE ABCDs OF VITAMINS

Vitamins are classified into two :

• Water-soluble(which are seen in fruits, vegetables, grains)-vitamin B and C
• Fat-soluble(stored in fat cells)- vitamin A and D

VITAMIN B: It makes energy and RBC. Its deficiency leads to anemia(B6 &B12) and mental confusion(B1&B3).

VITAMIN C: It protects the body from infection and helps to the growth and repair of tissues. Its deficiency leads to scurvy.

VITAMIN A: It helps to vision and its deficiency leads to xerophthalmia.

VITAMIN D:It promotes bone growth and strength, regulates the absorption of Ca and phosphorous. Its deficiency leads to rickets and osteomalacia.

2.VITAMINS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE

Vitamins are essential for proper growth , development and good health.

• Two types are Fat-soluble(ADEK) and Water-soluble(C,B complex vitamins)

VITAMIN A: Helps to see the color and night vision. Its deficiency leads to night blindness

VITAMIN E: It is important for the formation of RBC.It protects the lungs from damage by the polluted air.

VITAMIN C: It helps to bind cells together, wound healing, absorption of Ca by bones and teeth, fight against infection. Its deficiency leads to scurvy.

VITAMIN B: It helps the body to digest protein and to oxidize food to produce energy. Its deficiency leads to nervous disorder, beriberi, dry skin, mouth sores, poor growth, and anemia.

3 SUMMARY OF VITAMIN FUNCTIONS AND SOURCES

VITAMIN A: It boosts immunity and maintenance of skin structure. Its deficiency leads to night blindness, keratinization, decreased immunity.

VITAMIN D:It increases Ca absorption and its deficiency leads to rickets in children.

VITAMIN E:Antioxidant.

VITAMIN K: It makes blood clotting protein and bone-building protein. Its deficiency is associated with heart disease and osteoporosis.

VITAMIN C: It supports the immune system and improves iron absorption. Its deficiency lead to scurvy.

VITAMIN B: Helps in energy metabolism.B1 deficiency lead to beriberi and B3 deficiency lead to pellagra.

VITAMIN B12: Form blood cells and maintenance of nerves. Its deficiency lead to anemia and loss of feeling in feet.
