There are several features that are distinct to adult thought or adulthood:

Reflective thinking: The most important feature of adulthood is reflective thinking that refers to the implications of the experiences that the individual has collected in its past to the person and other persons for a particular judgment. It is a type of critical thinking that marks an adult thought.

Postformal thought: It is the stage of thought that is one step ahead of the formal operation stage described by Jean Piaget. Post formal thought can be described as person's will to accept the intellectual and moral complexities in a flexible and logical manner.

Cognitive development: the cognitive ability of an individual grows with age. The individual develops the methods to explore and get more knowledge about the things it is interested in. The adult stage has a distinctive cognitive development than the children which is more stable and reaches its highest level usual at the age of 35.

Emotional intelligence: Emotional intelligence is another very distinctive feature of adult thought as reflective thinking helps the individual manage the emotions. They are more capable of handling emotional traumas than children. Emotional intelligence allows individuals to interpret their emotions, such as the emotions, their meaning, and how it could affect the individuals present around.
