Anne is a 34-year old female, self-employed as a caterer. She has received an isolated bite wound on her right hand from an unrestrained dog, whilst attempting to protect her miniature schnauzer Otto from attack. Anne has to provide canapes to a large private function that evening, so she cleans the bite wound with running water and covers it with a bandage. Anne’s friend recommends that she should get her hand looked at by a health professional, so she makes an appointment to see her GP the following day.

Anne has no significant prior medical or surgical history and takes no medications. She is a non-smoker and consumes 5-7 units of alcohol per week. Anne has no allergies or sensitivities. Anne could not remember when she had received her last tetanus vaccine.
