Answer #1

The cyberknife- one of the most advanced form of radio surgery- is a painless, non invasive treatment that delivers high doses of precisely targeted radiation to destroy tumors or lesions within the body. It uses a robotic arm to deliver highly focused beams of radiation.

Clinically relevent accuracy or application accuracy of the cyberknife radiosurgery system is based on the beam delivery accuracy and target localization accuracy. Clinically relevent accuracy can be measured by delivering a radiation dose to phantoms, in which the target is defined on a set of CT images using all compnents of the cyber knife system, including the treatment planning softwear, the robot, he camera tracking system and the linear accelarator.Cyberknife directs precisely targeted radiation to tumors. Radiation oncologists can sculpt the beam to reach small deeply imbedded masses considered inoperable or untreatable with conventional radiation or surgery. The bloodless, painless, outpatient procedure can treat primary and metastatic brain, spine and soft tissue tumors, aiming for a cure or paliation, and is used for some benign conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia.

Whereas, conventional radiation therapy requires daily visits for weeks, cyberknife treatments typically wrap up within one week, with the patient spending 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, 1-5 days a week at the center. Patients come in for a consult several weeks prior to initiation of therapy. The nurse help with teaching and assess whether the patient can tolerate lying still and flat and whether they will need oxygen or pain medication during therapy. If the treatment involves soft tissue, fiducials (small markers that help the device track its positon) are needed. Cyberknife nurses assist the physician, placing the markers in prostate cancer patients. For lung, liver and pancreatic cancers, or any lesion that moves with respiration, the patient is also outfitted with the synchrony tracking vest. This comfortable vest is worn during treatments, and contains light-emiting diodes used for tracking the breathing motion. Fine-cut CT scans are performed which will be transferred to the cyberknife planning computers, where they are fused onto any MRI or PET scans or which may have been performed.

One of the most important tasks of the nurse is to make sure all is in motion to assure that the patient is treated efficiently and in a timely manner. The nurse is a navigator because getting a patient to the treatment table takes a lot of planning, educating, coordinating. The nurses should provided with adequate knowledge regarding cyberknife system.
