It is useful for guiding day-to-day decisions and also for evaluating progress and changing approaches when moving forward. In other words, it refers to a systematic process whereby such an organization identifies its current state, where it would like to be, and creates a roadmap for reaching such an endpoint. This plan includes a set of decision-making criteria on everything from staff to technology to capital and more, all of which will help it reach the desired future state.

The strategic planning process is divided into 5 successive phases which are as follows:

1. Defining the Mission, Vision and Values
2. Strategy Formulation
3. Operational Planning
4. Assessing the Results
5. Reformulating the Strategy

In conclusion we can say that strategic planning is a useful tool for steering healthcare organizations, in certain circumstances.
