PREPARATION OF PATIENT FOR PROSTATE BIOPSY PROCEDURE :

BIOPSY : Biopsy is defined as cutting of a small part of body tissue or organ, using fine needle biopsy to identify presence of any malignant cells in the body.

Explain procedure of prostate biopsy before the surgery may reduce the level of anxiety in patient. Provide information to patient about importance of biopsy, how the procedure is performed in a safer hands, provide assurance on every thing is going to be good. Procedure of prostate biopsy includes :

* Insertion of a fine needle inside the prostate gland touching the rectal wall for collection of tissue samples for pathological examination.

* Prostate biopsy method is performed under Trans rectal ultrasound guided biopsy (TRUS)

PREPARATION OF PATIENT BEFORE THE PROCEDURE :

1. Take consent from patient

2. Obtain health history of patient including previous and present medical history, allergies to any injections or drugs, past surgical histories,anesthesia, etc

3. Educate patient to avoid smoking and alcoholism

4. Provide enema before the procedure

5. Administer antibiotics therapy to prevent infections during procedure

6. Keep patient on NBM (Nothing By Mouth) before the procedure

7. Preparation of the body part before the procedure

8. Encourage patient not to take nutritive supplements before the surgery.
