It is electronic or mechanical conversion of images of typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text from a scanned copy of document, a photo of a document, a scene-photo or from subtitle text superimposed on an image.

OCR helps in easy data entry and easy extraction of recorded information and its digitisation.
