1. During the lecture I advised everyone to practice, practice, practice your resume and interviewing skills. Is that good advice and how do you go about practicing a resume or an interview?

2. We all have or will soon submit resumes and interview for a job. What are some of the tips you have heard or used for first writing a resume and second participating in a successful interview (lets learn from each other)?

3. Let's assume you are interviewing for a retail sales position or a professional position in a bank, Dr. office, hospital, etc. How should you dress? Do tattoos, body piercings etc. hinder your job search? Should they?

4. Last weeks discussion was very interesting. Many of you took me and Hertzberg to task over my assertion that money is not a motivator. I usually get mixed reactions to this question (that's why I ask it) and I was surprised at how many of you agreed that money is not, at least a major motivator.    I appreciate the discussion but I'm still not convinced. Let's talk some more about money and motivation. If money is a motivator does the highest paying employer get the best employees and the best performance? If so why doesn't everyone pay high wages? If money is not a motivator should we endeavor to keep wages at a minimum and pay as little as possible? It's a motivator so pay as much as you can or It's not a motivator so pay as little as possible. I'm confused. Are there other factors at work here? Help me understand.

Answer 1 .

The famous saying " practice makes a man perfect " should be remembered and applied everytime we try to achieve something. When we talk of a job interview , our resume is the only thing that th recruiter goes through. So it is a good advise to practice a resume before the interview. Whenever I have an interview schedule , I create or modify my resume according to the company or the position I am applying for. I put only those things in my resume which I could answer when I am asked about it. Putting the things out of your knowledge will create a bad impression if we fail to answer the questions on it. I always search for the errors like spelling mistakes , errors in dates , etc. I prepare for the questions that are likely to be asked . For example if I put cricket in my hobby , then I do prepare for the questions like who is your favorite cricker & why .

Answer 2 . I have heard many tips for writing a resume as well as for successful interview. A resume should be made in proper templet. Use basic fonts and proper font size . Heading should be bold . Your objectives should be clearly mentioned and you should be able to justify it. You should mention only that information which you are able to explain if asked. For interview, Dress should be strict formal , with light color shirt and a tie with proper knot , shoes must be cleaned and shiny . You should always ask the permission before going inside the room or sitting on a chair. You should have a smile on your face while being interviewed. You must have an eye contact with each and everyone of the panel member . You should not give false information if you don't know the answer. You must say no if you don't know the answers.

Answer 3

Our attire should be formal one with nice white or light blue shirt with red color tie, black formal trouser , black formal shoes , with dark color socks . Tattoos , body piercings etc might hinder the job search. This all depends on the organisation. There are many companies that allow the tattoos but organisations like banks or government offices are strict . I think tattoos , body piercing should not hinder the job search , an individual should not be judged by his looks.

Answer 4

We can't say that money is not a motivator , money is one of the motivator but it all depends from person to person his factors of motivation. Some employee are motivated through awards and recognition and some are through monetary benefits. Therefore it is not always the case that highest paying employer gets the best employees or performances. Same is the case with endevoring to keep minimum and pay as little as possible. Money should be treated as essential needs of the employees. They spent half of their life working just to earn money for thier livelihood. Paying them minimum would create havoc and the standard of life would go down. The motivational factor varies from individual, we can't generalize and apply only one factor to all employees.
