As an educated and religiously devout person back in the 1540's , I would have believed Copernicus because at the time Copernicus wrote and published his theories it was already estimated that earth moved but not clear on where and around what. So if he proved at the time that the earth moved around the sun and the sun was situated in the center I would have surely believed that theory.

Back then I would have chosen to speak for the Copernicus theory rather than against because first of all the entire scholars and the students theoretically believed in his helicomodel because it made easier to solve the problems mathematically. Also, there were some questions that had started to arise related to the proven fact about earth being stationary and other planets and sun revolving , hence the idea of Copernicus was new and interesting which turned heads later.

Hence, during that era, I would have believed in the Copernicus's model and his theories even though the people had went against him.
