As an institution committed to serving the community, Smithfield University Hospital has agreed to provide healthcare services to the women and children living in the Elias Domestic Violence Shelter (EDVS) located 5 miles from the hospital. These services include a special weekly clinic held at the shelter as well as in-hospital services as needed. It is anticipated that all units in the hospital will participate in the program.

EDVS is a 32-bed shelter for women and children seeking refuge from violence in their homes. The residents represent the most high risk segment of the domestic violence population. The violence they have experienced is severe and they have very limited social and material resources. They come to the shelter because they have nowhere else to go. Few of the women are employed and most have a high school diploma or less. Their healthcare needs range from emergency services to acute and preventive physical and mental health services. Several of the women and children have chronic conditions. The residents are a transient population and their contact with healthcare services is limited and infrequent. Health education is an important component of the care they receive from the hospital staff, who strive to teach them to care for themselves and their children.

1.

What risk factors suggest that this population may have low literacy and inadequate health skills?

2.

How would you assess the reading and comprehension levels of the residents? What clues will you look for?

3.

Select a teaching strategy you would use with this population. Explain why this strategy would work when teaching groups with mixed literacy levels.

4.

How will you evaluate the learning that has taken place as a result of your instruction?

Answer #1

1.Risk factors are people don't have the knowledge to free themselves from the violence and being as a transient population suggest that they may have low literacy rate and adequate health skills. They don't know what can one do if violence occurs to them how they report to police and judiciary system show their lack of knowledge and literacy.

2.Make one of the individual to read out the rules or timings of the camp or anything about health thus shuffle the readers while reading can gives us opportunity to know how much they know thus how can find the comprehension too.

3.Teaching tool must be a visual, pictures or videos.Because by watching their concentration increases and also people with low literacy level also understand clearly about the concept.Hence it is suitable for all literacy level people.

4.Observing the behaviour changes and adapting the healthy attitude and skills is the result of the instructions. For example, this people are suffered by violence but after the psychological and support classes if they develop the self support against violence that is the result of our instruction.
