The marijuana and it’s legalisation has been a topic of debate for many decades and finally some states have legalised it. It has many uses as in the field of medicine as medical marijuana and also as a recreational drug.
Even with its various uses as a medicinal drug, it’s usage is very strictly monitored. Its use as a recreational drug is also very strictly monitored as per the law. But there are many side effects to the usage of this drug for recreational purposes.
As the question is about ways it negatively affects society, I’ll stick to the topic. The following are some of the many ways how marijuana can effect the society in a negative way. The high which the consumers of this recreational drug gets is addictive. So they tend to use it on a daily basis instead of occasional use for which the drug is intended for. This could also increase the usage of drug by minors and children even though it is illlegal to do so. This leads to increase in the cases of driving under influence and also could potentially cause rise in the crime rate. Research shows that there is known dependence and addictive nature to this drug. The pressing issue here is that the usage is high in the lower socioeconomic group who resort to other illegal means of earning money to pay for their addiction. This in turn cause increase in crime rates. There has also been increase in the drop out rates in the schools due to consumption of drugs in the campus. Now that the business became a booming multimillion dollar industry, more and more concentrated weed is being bought by these companies and made available to the public. The consumption of such high concentrations could have detrimental effects on health. This implies increase in the ill and increase in the money spent on treatment and rehabilitation. But as most of the people come from poor backgrounds they can’t afford the treatment and the burden falls on the State. Even though the argument is that the flow is strictly monitored and controlled, there are simply many ways that it all could go wrong and lead to unwanted consequences.
This is a my brief view on how legalisation of marijuana could affect the society in a negative way. Hope this is helpful. Please feel free to give your feedback and if you need further detailed insight on this topic. Thank you and have a great day.
