Prepare for math nursing test. teacher ask to know about insulin. What should I know about insulin
Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the beta cell of the islet of Langerhans of the pancreas which metabolizes glucose and helps in entering glucose in the blood that provides energy, and lack of insulin may cause diabetes.
INSULIN IS the chemical that permits the cell to absorb glucose from the blood
the pancreas is the organ that is responsible for for the production of insulin to metabolize glucose, it is the organ located behind the stomach and it has clusters of cells called alpha and beta cells and beta cells of the pancreas are responsible for insulin production that controls blood sugar level in the blood.
when the glucose level is higher in the body more insulin is needed to balance the glucose in the blood, insulin helps in the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and provides energy if insulin level is too high or too low than both the conditions can be serious,
INSULIN PROBLEMS when the body's immune system attacks on beta cells of pancreas it doesn't allow production of insulin and the absorption of the glucose doesn't take place into the cells and it remains in the blood, this condition is called TYPE 1 DIABETES and regular insulin shots are needed to make the glucose enter into the blood.
the overweight and obese client develops mainly develops resistant to the insulin and this inability of the insulin to enter into the blood is called insulin resistant.
type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to overcome the insulin resistance.
INSULIN TYPES
A PERSON TAKES SYNTHETIC INSULIN TO OVERCOME THE INCREASED BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL AND THERE ARE VARIOUS TYPES OF INSULIN THAT IS BASED UPON THE PERSON NEEDS AND THE CONDITION.
1. FAST ACTING INSULIN
THIS TYPE OF INSULIN GETS ABSORBED QUICKLY INTO THE BLOODSTREAM BY THE SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUES. PEOPLE TAKE THIS INSULIN TO CORRECT HYPERGLYCEMIA AND ALSO TO AVOID GLUCOSE SHOOT AFTER THE MEAL.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF FAST ACTING INSULIN
a) RAPID ACTING INSULIN ANALOG
IT TAKES 5 TO 15 MIN TO ACT AND LASTS FOR 4 HOURS.
b) REGULAR HUMAN INSULIN
IT TAKES 30 MIN TO 1 HOUR TO ACT AND ITS EFFECTS IS FOR MAXIMUM 8 HOURS, A LARGER DOSE IS NEEDED TO GET ITS EFFECT AND ALSO DELAY THE PEAK EFFECT OF IT.
2. INTERMEDIATE ACTING INSULIN
IT ENTERS INTO THE BLOOD AT A VERY SLOWER RATE BUT HAS A LONG LASTING EFFECT, IT IS ADMINISTERED TO CONTROL ELEVATED BLOOD SUGAR IN NIGHT OR BETWEEN THE MEALS.
EG;
NPH HUMAN INSULIN
IT TAKES 1 TO 2 HOUR FOR ITS PEAK ONSET AND LASTS FOR 4 TO 6 HOURS AND IN SOME PATIENTS IT LASTS UP TO 12 HOURS, AN INCREASE DOSE OF NPH WILL INCREASE THE TIME DURATION TO REACH TO THE PEAK AND ALSO OVERALL TIME DURATION AND ITS EFFECT.
3. SHORT ACTING INSULIN
AFTER ACHIEVING ONSET IT STABILISES AND ITS EFFECT LASTS FOR FEW DAYS IT IS USED FOR HIGH GLUCOSE LEVEL, BETWEEN MEALS AND ALSO DURING FASTING.
the conclusion is
Diabetes is the metabolic disorder in which lack of insulin or increased blood glucose level or both take place, to overcome these conditions insulin is needed to make the glucose available in the blood enters into the cell to produce energy and the organ that is involved in the production of insulin is the pancreas.
