ALLOCATING LIMITED DONOR ORGANS OR PAYMENT FOR ORGANS

Payment for organs is an emotive subject in the transplant community. part of the reason for this is that in many countries the notion of organ donation as a 'gift ' is highly valued. the difference between a gift and commodity is clearly understood and applies equally to living as well as decreased organ donation.

• in 2004 the world health organization urged members ' to take measures to protect the poorest and vulnerable groups from transplant tourism and sales of tissue or organs.
• such systems are proposed to attempt to remove the need for an underground and illegal black market in organs however buying and selling organs can never make ethical because it always penalizes the weakest. financial gradients are inherently exploitive.
• the national Organ Transplant Act of 1984 makes it illegal to sell human organs but did not prohibit payment for a donation of human plasma, sperm and egg cell
• to protect potential donors, regulation and payment must be governed by a balance, objective and multidisciplinary body.
