According to Nina Jablonski in the "Skin color is an illusion" TED talk video Charles Darwin knew melanin (dark colored skin) was more prevalent in geographic locations closer to the equator. However, he rejected the idea that skin color had any connection to the environment. UV rays produce vitamin D, which is a vital nutrient for humans to have in their body. However too much UV radiation can cause health problems such as skin cancer. Melanin is a natural form of sunblock. Since there is a lot more UV radiation in areas near the equator having more melanin created a selective advantage for darker skinned people in this region. Natural Selection is one of the forces of evolution and is the idea that organisms that are better suited to live in their environment will live longer and produce more off spring. In this case I think in hotter regions people who are darker skinned have a selective advantage and over time when people migrated to other regions where there is not as much UV radiation produced. Darker skinned people have a selective disadvantage in those colder climates nearest the north and south poles. Over time lighter skinned people had a selective advantage in cooler climates because they were able to absorb the vitamin D produced through UV rays despite there being a lack of UV rays in colder region's and over time were able to produce more offspring in those climates causing the evolution of skin color in humans.

People those have dark coloured skin produces more melanin and they are more protected from skin diseases as compared to the people with fair skin.
