THIORIDAZINE

EXPECTED PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION

Thioridazine hydrochloride is a typical antipsychotic medication used for the treatment of schizophrenia.It belongs to 2- methylmercapto-10 -phenothaizines.

THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS

It is used for the treatment of mental disordes like schizophrenia,prevent suicidal tendencies,help to decrease the negative thoughts and hallucinations.

COMPLICATIONS

  1. drowsiness
  2. restlessness
  3. headache
  4. blurred vision
  5. lethargy
  6. nausea,vomiting,diarrhea
  7. amenorrhea
  8. breast engorgement
  9. ventricular tachycardia
  10. contact dermatitis
  11. difficulty in urinating

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

Available in 10 mg,25 mg,50 mg,100 mg tablets

children-0.5 to 3 mg/kg/day. 8 hourly per oral

Adult-Starting dose 50-100 mg per oral three times a day,maintenance dose is 200-800 mg/day in 2-4 divided doses

CONTRAINDICATIONS/PRECAUTIONS

Medication should be protect from light,and stored at 15-30 degree celcious. Drug should keep in tight light resistant containers using child resistant closure.

  • Do not use in hypersensitivity to phenothiazines
  • Avoid using with any drugs that prolong QT interval
  • Avoid in lactation
  • Avoid using in children with suspected Reye's syndrome
  • Avoid using this drug for patients with cardiac arrythmias,hypertensive patients
  • Administer phenothiazines cautiously and to increase the dose gradually in patients who are driving
  • caution for orthostatic hypotension
  • Monitor for leukopenia,aranulocytosis,convulsion

INTERACTIONS

  • Administration of propranolol with phenothiazines increases plasma levels and its metabolites
  • The drugs that may interact with this medication include-levodopa,benztropine,atropine,guanethidine,lithium,pergolide,fluoxentine,fluoxamine.

NURSING INTERVENTIONS

  • Assess the heart rate,heart sounds,and report if any symptoms like palpitation,restlessness,chest discomfort,breathing difficulty,fatigue and fainting
  • Watch for hyperthermia,diaphoresis,muscle rigidity,mental confusion,tachycardia,changes in blood pressure-the symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome and report it immediately to physician
  • Monitor for fever,sore throat,leukopenia and other signs of infection
  • Assess the BP periodically
  • Monitor foe signs of allergic reactions
  • implement fall prevention strategies in patients with extra pyramidal symptoms and blurred vision

CLIENT EDUCATION

  1. Explain about the drug action ,side effects,interactions,precautions while using this drug
  2. Take the drug with or without food as prescribed by the physician
  3. Do not adjust the dose with out doctors order
  4. Use the medication regularly to get the desired benefit
  5. If any side effects occurs report it immediately
  6. Before taking this medication,tell to the doctor about the medical problems and the medications you are using'
  7. Limit the use of alcohol and beverages
  8. Consult your doctor before breast feeding as the drug passes in to the breast milk
  9. If you miss a dose ,take it as soon as you remember
  10. Store at room temperature  away from light and moisture.

Medication effectiveness can be evaluated by decrease in positive symptoms of schizophrenia
