An 11 year old needs a healthy diet for his proper growth and development. The diet will be same as the dietary needs of any other child of the same age, but the diet should be healthy. Kids with diabetes benefit from a healthy diet the same as everyone else. Carefully select the food groups while planning the diet. Jason should be made aware of his health condition and the importance of following a healthy diet. The time of food is very important in managing diabetes. The interval between food sin properly managed. The small and frequent meal is recommended. As Jason is moderately active and he has participated in soccer practice caloric requirement will be around 1600 - 2200 calories.

Breakfast: Jason’s breakfast meal plan can include two slices of whole wheat bread with two teaspoons of reduced fat peanut butter, half of one low fat string cheese, one orange, and drink one cup of fat free almond milk.

Morning snack: His morning snacks can include half of a banana and a cup of steamed carrots.

Lunch: For lunch Jason will be eating 1 whole-wheat pita bread with ½ a cup of slice roasted turkey breast, 4 tablespoons of avocados, 1 peach, ½ a cup of non fat Greek yogurt, a one cup of black beans, and ½ a cup of 100% cranberry juice with no added sugar.

Afternoon snacks: Jason’s afternoon snacks will consist of non-fat plain Greek yogurt, 1/2 a cup diced pineapple, ½ a peach and a handful of pecans on the side.

After school snacks for soccer practice:

For Jason’s afternoon snack he will be eating 1 whole apple and drinking Pedisure with glucose control, and 8 fl oz of water to stay hydrated.

Dinner: For dinner Jason will eat: three ounces of roast beef, one cup of broccoli,serve with ½ cup of pre-cooked brown rice and steamed green beans, and a glass of water.

Evening snacks: For evening snacks he will be eating Whole grain crackers, and 1 cup mix with blueberries and strawberries, and low fat skimmed milk.

While considering the Type 1 DM, complex carbohydrates can be included in the diet along with insulin therapy to meet the growing needs of the child. Diet plan should be developed based on the age, gender, and extend of physical activity. A nurse should have several considerations when dealing with a child suffering from diabetes. Moreover, a nurse should know that a child suffering from diabetes are required to keep their blood sugar levels under control by balancing their intake of carbohydrates with their insulin and activity levels, and minimizing the intake of lipids. So, the nurse will have to educate the child parents of how many lipids, carbohydrates, and protein the child should intake daily, tailored specially for his conditions. Diet should mainly contain complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, whole wheat, oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, beans. For quality, proteins include egg, fish, lean meat, dairy, beans, and legumes. For fat include omega 3 rich foods, like lean fishes and oats. Last but not least, the nurse should make sure that the child glucose level is being monitored the right way, and the right dosage of insulin is giving when the child’s glucose level gets too high.
