The effect of ageing in learning and memory
We know as we gets olders our brain doesn't change structurally as a whole
The changes that usually occur in brain is formation of new connection between new nerve cells and loss of nerve connections
As we age there are formation of many new neuronal connection which help in learning and memorizing things but it usually occurs till a certain amount of time in our life span .
Researchers have put forward many theories about how as we grow older our brain shows changes
One of the theory is as ageing couse loss of brain cells from the front part of the brain which cause reduction in a neurotransmitter which is known as acetylcholine . Which is very important for learning and memory
As we age there is also loss of area of brain known as hippocampus . Hippocampus is a vital area for memorizing things
It is said that with every passing decade we loose 5 percent of nerve cell of hippocampus of brain and till 80 yr of age we losses around 20 percent nerve cell of our hippocampus which result in dementia and loss of memory
But this doesn't hold true for all the people
Some old age people who are usually active mentally and physically usually have sharp memories . So it depend on you how the age effect your learning and memory until you have some inherited problems
Reaction time also get slower in old age as they respond to the stimuli slow
One of the major disease of old age is Alzheimer's disease which is often associated with loss of memory and learning in old age people
Hope you find this helpful thank you ☺️
Motor Learning and Development Learning Aids Supplemental Activities Primary aging includes age-related declines as a function of healthy aging, whereas secondary aging is the result of disease or environmental effects. For each of the systems discussed in this chapter, list several examples of primary aging and secondary aging. Primary aging Secondary aging Skeletal system Muscular system Cardiovascular system Nervous system Endocrine system Sensory system
Describe the characteristics of the aging process. Explain how some of the characteristics may lead to elder abuse (memory issues, vulnerability, etc.). Discuss the types of consideration a nurse must be mindful of while performing a health assessment on a geriatric patient as compared to a middle-aged adult.
