Glycolysis: It is the principle route for carbohydrate metabolism.. Pathway takes place in all cells of the body. It is the only pathway which can operate aerobically and anaerobically

Irreversible steps of glycolysis are:

1.Hexokinase.

2.phospofructokinase.

3.pyruvate kinase .

In the given scenerio all the steps of glycolysis are completed except last step that is conversion of phospoenol pyruvate to pyruvate which is catalized by pyruvate kinase here ATP is generated.

It will be due to pyruvate kinase deficiency: In pyruvate kinase deficiency, total ATP generated will decrease to 50%. RBC will tend to gain calcium, lose pottasium and water. This leads to hemolysis and anemia.

There will be two to three folds of elevation in 2,3 BPG level due to blockage of conversion of phospho enol pyruvate to pyruvate. The increase of 2,3 BPG will moderate the effects of anemia by favouring unloading of oxygen to the tissues.

Thus we need to test for 2,3 BPG level in blood.
