Answer #1

18) Wound Drain

Wound drain is the medical equipment used to drain the unwanted fluid from the body to the outer surface. Wound drains are classified into open wound drain and closed wound drain.

18.1) Closed wound drain:

It has a closed type of drain system which attaches to the wound and secured with suture. It has vacuum drains which apply negative pressure and non-vacuum drains. It does not expose the content to the atmosphere and does not contact with the external environment. So it has a low risk of infection compared to open wound drainage.

18.2) Open wound drain:

This type of drain is inserted directly into the wound bed that drains fluid on gauze or stoma bag. It is secured with the suture or pin. The drain has been contacted with the external atmosphere. It has more chance of risk of potential infection.
