the fact that hemoglobin content declined to a much greater percentage than RBC count suggests a diagnosis of hypochromic microcytic anemia. In a single episode of blood loss, these two indicators and the hematocrit would all decline by the same percentage. What is the difference between these situations?

Answer #1

Hypochromic microcytic anemia shows the RBCs with small size and pale-colored. It occurs due to iron deficiency. It results in reduced hematocrit (due to reduced RBC count), and low hemoglobin levels.

During hemorrhage, the RBCs are lost. Immediately after hemorrhage, the hematocrit and Hb levels do not show the extent of RBC loss because the plasma is also lost the same rate and volume. It takes several hours for the fluid volume to increase (due to the interstitial fluid shift into the vessels), and the overall RBC count decreases, which is indicated by reduced hematocrit. The loss of RBCs explain the reduced Hb levels after blood loss.

But the RBCs in a person with blood loss are generally normocytic, but not microcytic (observed in anemia patient).
