Answer #1

The exposed part of the eye (anterior surface) is covered by a thin mucous membrane called, conjunctiva. The conjunctiva also continues to cover the inner surface of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition of the conjunctiva, which is accompanied by redness. It can be caused by bacteria, virus, or allergen also.

The bacterial conjunctivitis is generally caused by the Staphylococcus aureus or streptococcus pneumonia. H. influenza, P. aeruginosa, etc. The mode of infection is through contaminated utensils, eye to eye contact or contact through the mucosal layers.

Therapeutic measures: Topical antibiotics, topical interferons, and corticosteroids, cycloplegic agents. Antiviral drugs are administered for the treatment of herpes simplex infection.

During conjunctivitis, the affected eye develops pain, redness, inflammation, and discharge from the eyes that prevent the opening of eyes in the early morning. It takes one to two weeks for the symptoms to come down, depending on the severity of the condition. It interferes with daily activities as it is a contagious condition and causes pain when trying to use eyes continuously. Taking rest is one of the important parts of conjunctivitis treatment.
