WORK PLACE VIOLENCE IN HEALTHCARE

Violence is an action which causes destruction, pain or suffering. Violence such as Physical, emotional or verbal abuse directed towards employees on duty is called work place violence. Healthcare field is such an area, that is more prone to work place violence. Staffs from healthcare settings are suffering more from work place violence than any other professions. A report from Joint Commission states that 68 major violent attacks( homicide, suicide,rape and physical abuse) happened for hospital staff in last eight years. Approximately 38 staffs among 100 nurses reporting work place violence every year.

There are many contributing factors to work place violence in healthcare field.

* extreme stress level of patients and family members

* Fear and anxious over illness causes agitation in patients

* Psychiatric problems of patient

* gun violence

* lack of resources for patients and family members

Risk factors for Workplace violence in healthcare field are

* Emergency department staffs ( are more prone to work place violence)

* working alone

* working in psychiatric setting

* working in areas where there is high criminal activities reported

* working in a disaster field and in a public place

* lack of proper control measures.

Reaction to work place violence should be assertive by every staff. Answer them assertively who ever is abusing you verbally.Remaining calm by avoiding arguments( verbal abuse), adhering to policiesof the hospital while responding to opponents are the necessary steps to handle a work place violence especially VERBAL ABUSE. Aggression management training have to give to each staff during induction programme so that they might protect themselves and others from physical abuse.
