Inflammatory bowel disease is an idiopathic disease caused by dysregulated immune response to the intestine flora.

There are two major types of inflammatory disease -they are

  • Crohn's disease
  • Ulcerative colitis

Priority nursing actions will be :

  1. Diarrhea: Passage of loose stools or unformed stools. so as a nurse assess the onset and pattern of diarrhea. Observe and record stool frequency , characterstics , amount and caustive factors.Provide bed rest to patient and comfort.
  2. Risk for voulme deficit:Excessive loss of fluid will be there due to loose stools . so as a nurse needs to replenish the fluid through iv infusion.Increase the fluid intake and monitor intake and output.
  3. Acute pain: Acute abdominal pain will be there due to cramps etc, So appropriate pain medicines to be given as per advise.
  4. Imbalanced nutrition less than body requirements: So due to loose stools and pain abdomen patient will be not having proper food, so get a diet plan as per dietician orders then provide appropriate food which balance the nutritional factors required for the body.

Diet plan for patient with inflammatory bowel disease:

Breakfast: 1 cup of oatmeal with 1 cup of light soy milk and 1 banana with 2tbsp of peanut butter.

Mid morning snack: 1 cup of low fat plain greek yogurt with 1 cup diced cantaloupe.

Lunch: 2oz turkey burger open faced on 1/2 potato bun with 1 cup roasted carrot fries.

Mid afternoon snack:Green juice , celery, cucumber and green apples.

Dinner: lean meat loaf, mashed potatoes, 1 cup almond milk.

Complications of ulcerative colitis:

  • colon cancer
  • skin, joint inflammation
  • blood clots
  • severe bleeding
  • perforated colon
  • severe dehydration
  • mega colon
  • liver disease
