Answer #1

5.The IV.KCL has yo be diluted in D5 or 0.9%NS

The maximum dose which can be given is 60 to 80 mEq/1L of IV fluid as per order

The maximum rate to be infused in a hour is 10mEq through a peripheral line and not more than 20mEq in a central venous catheter

The only route of administration is intravenous line after dilution.

Administration via IM or SC can be fatal and often cause death immediately due to its cardiac conduction activity.

6.The following patiwnt education is needed for a patient who is given oral potassium supplements

  • Follow diet as ordered (avoid potassium rich diet ),low salt diet foods may be rich in potassium so it has to be avoided
  • Avoid diuretics which are potassium sparing
  • Dilute the medicine with at least 4 ounce of water
  • Take it with or after food
  • Report any side effects
  • Avoid OTC drugs

7.The potassium is excreted via renal system ,when there is decreased urine output, this will increase the potassium level in the body. Additionally IV fluid administration can cause fluid overload and increased workload on kidney leading to nephrotoxicity.

The nurse should report to the concerned provider meanwhile checking the vital signs and fir other symptoms

8.Diuretics are contraindicated generally unless ordered or is necessary for the patient. The following information has to be given to the patient

  • Monitor output and inform changes (can decrease output)
  • Report in case of palpitations, chest pain, dizziness, discomfort, nausea or vomiting, confusion (side effects)
