Case Study #8 PATH 2163 This 84 y/o female patient is well known by the clinic laboratory staff. At the time of this follow-up check on the patient's well-being her leukemia therapy had been completed and she was (hopefully) in remission. The lab reported the following CBC results. 5.8 x 10°/ul 2.33 x 10°/L Hemoglobin 10.0 g/dL Hematocrit 31.4% RDW 18.2% Platelet Count 377 x 10°/L MPV 10.4fL Special Instruction / Questions 1. The prognosis for this patient is looking hopeful and favorable. If the condition reoccurs, statistically what will be the most likely cause of death. 2. The lab routinely uses other cytochemical stains, but had not done so for this patient. Considering the results of the stained blood film evaluation, what would be your prediction of the staining outcome with myeloperoxidase, Sudan Black B, and PAS stains?
