Assumption

An assumption is a hope of what you assume to be true in the future. Based on the knowledge gained, data available and the experiences you had, you make assumptions.

Assumption is a cited fact, statement or judgement that is assumed for a particular project and that is not believed to vary during the course of the project. A variation of the assumptions has a serious impact on the project as the decisions, estimates and designs of the project are based on assumptions.

They are called assumptions because you assume these things will be in place to move forward your project successfully, even though you don’t have clear evidence.

It is important to identify the project assumptions, because you may believe them to be true, but you have to convince others also. Identify and create a project assumption list, so that it will be clearly remain there throughout the project.

The assumptions must be well cited and properly communicated. In a Project work, assumptions must be cited under Project assumptions log separately.

Categories of Assumptions:

There are a number of categories of assumptions. Let’s discuss a list of those.

·        Resources: materials, facility, people essential for a project. Eg: availability of class room for a doing pre test, availability of post test groups on time etc

·        Budget or the cost of the project: The estimated financial cost of the project. Eg: the budget will not change as estimated and there will not be any additional cost

·        Schedule: the time needs, tasks and dependencies for the project. Eg: the questionnairs for pre test will be available on time, the educational programme can be conducted as planned.

·        Methodology: the study method or approach you decide for doing the project. Eg: observational study, experimental study, survey etc
