The seven major functions of the complement cascade are

  • They engulf the harmful foreign organisms via process of phagocytosis
  • When there is an injury at a site, the white blood cells usually come in contact with them releasing neutrophils and macrophages resulting in inflammation. This moment of the police force (WBC) ti the affected site is called as chemotaxis
  • They are responsible for the production of antibodies against an antigen
  • In case of any immune complex they are removed by the complement cascade and thus deposited in the liver and spleen
  • The mast cells are activated by the complement cascade
  • They break down the cell which are with microorganisms and releasing it in the blood after deactivation and for clearance called as cell lysis
  • They identify the foreign organisms for the process 9f phagocytosis called as opsonization.
