- PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization while HMO is a Health Maintenance Organization.

- The premium of an HMO are usually lower than for a PPO.

- PPO plans allow members to see any health care provider or any specialist in the insurance company's network without a referral but in a HMO plan usually require Primary care physician referrals for non emergency needs.

- PPO plans have more flexibility in selecting a doctor or hospital.

- PPO plans often has fewer restrictions on seeing out of network providers and sometimes covers the cost of visits to out of network providers whereas in HMO plans provide a list of network providers including specialists but if choosen by members to visit a doctor outside of network,it is possible there is no coverage provided and will have to pay the fall cost for the visit by the member.
