A photostimulable phosphor plate is a flexible plate with 1 mm thickness and coated with europium activated fluorohalide compounds in crystalline formation embedded in organic binding material.When the plate is exposed to ionizing radiation, photostimulable phosphor stores the latent image.When the plate is scanned with a red laser beam, stored energy is released as visible light.The emitted light is detected by a photomultiplier tube and converted to electric signals.These electrical signals are processed and converted to a digital image.The stored information on the plates can be erased by exposing it to room level fluorescent light and then these plates can be reused.

The dynamic range of these image receptors is more higher than that of film screen system due to the increased number of receptors in the digital images.
