Roy adaptation model is a very important theory in nursing. It was developed by Sister Callista Roy in 1976. According to Roy adaptation model in nursing, individual is supposed to be a set of interrelated biological, psychological, and social systems. The individuals make great efforts to maintain a balance between these systems and the outside world. They struggles to live within a unique band in which they can adapt adequately. This model describes nursing as a service to society.

According to this model, people adapt positively to environmental changes, and this requires conscious awareness, self reflection, and choice to create human and environmental integration. Person, health, environment, and nursing are the key concepts of this model.

Roy adaptation model states that health is an inevitable and significant dimension in individual's life. According to this model, nursing accepts the humanistic approach of giving value to other's opinions and perspectives. Interpersonal relations plays a significant role in nursing. Nursing promotes adaptation in the four adaptive modes (physiologic needs, self concept, interdependence, and role function).

The nurse and other healthcare professionals should make adaptations to the nursing care plan on basis of patient's progress towards health.
