Instructions Below is a picture of George's chromosomes (a hypothetical example). They show his genotypes for Cystic Fibrosis (Cc), ear attachment (ee), tongue rolling (Tt), and polydactyly (Pp) Mand Drepresents the chromosomes he inherited from Mom and Dad, and the number indicates which chromosome the genes for the above traits are on. Chromosome 1 Chromosome 2 Chromosome 3 M3 D3 M1 D1 M2 D2 T It C P p e
In the following activity you will draw pictures of George's chromosomes at various stages of the cell cycle. You should draw them by hand, take a picture and upload them. Partial credit will be awarded for incorrect answers if answers are drawn neatly and you have followed the directions Metaphase For example, this is a picture of a cell going through metaphase during mitosis. Table I: Alleles and their color designation Trait Phenotype Allele Gene Allele Color Chloride dominant Red recessive pink E dominantBlue recessive purple TONGUE T dominant Orange recessive Tan P dominantYellow p recessive lime green 5 fingers Functioning Chloride lon channel Non-functioning Chloride ion channel Unattached or "free" earlobe Attached earlobe CFTR Channel Earlobe Attachment (fictional) Tongue Rolling Number of Fingers C EAR e Can roll tongue into U Cannot roll tongue Polydactyly or 6 fingers (fictional) t GLI3 Notes on the table above: 1. Cystic Fibrosis is a recessive disease that occurs when an individual has both recessive alleles (cc). It is caused by the dysfunctional chloride ion channels in epithelial cells; we will talk more about this later. 2. Earlobe attachment and tongue rolling have often been thought to behave according to classic Mendelian genetics, but we have not identified a single gene responsible for these traits, which is why in this table we have fictional genes. GLI3 and CFTR are the real names for those genes.
Instructions Continued from Part 1: Oogonia and spermatogia are the diploid egg and sperm cells that undergo a specialized type of cell division (meiosis) to make haploid egg and sperm. This cell division happens in two phases: Meiosis I and Meiosis II. The end result are genetically unique cells. The details will be described as you work through the activity. The picture below is still a picture of George's chromosomes. They could represent his somatic cells (non sex cells) prior to DNA duplication (G1 phase) or when the cell is at rest (GO phase). This picture can also represent what his spermatogonia look like prior to DNA duplication and meiosis. Just like you did for mitosis, in this activity you will be asked to draw George's chromosomes at various stages of meiosis. Chromosome 1 Chromosome 2 Chromosome 3 М3 D3 M1 D1 M2 D2 T C C P p

Mendelian Genetics The gene involved in the disease Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) is on human chromosome 11. Allele “A” is the normal form of the gene and codes for a part of the protein complex called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is required for your blood cells to carry oxygen. Allele “a” is an abnormal form of the gene. The hemoglobin protein made from the “a” allele is defective. Red blood cells containing the defective protein are very fragile. This disease is recessive–meaning...
