There are three main determinants of how team members identify value in their work: meaning, recognition and ownership.

Apply these three elements to your own experience of being a member of a team.

Provide an example from your own experience of how this was (or was not) provided from a team you were a part if. Your example can be related to previous experience with a work team, sports team, church, choir/band, etc.

Identify the team and provide some some context, who was the leader, and discuss your role and elements related to finding meaning, recognition and ownership from the experience.

Providing an example of a successful team-

An IT company enrolled few professionals to develop skills and expertise in managing the design and development of client websites. " Project management Methodologies" uses team of 5 professionals in each team to utilize their specialist skills to meet a "real need" for an industry client. Team roles include programmers, Graphic designers and project managers. There were around 5 teams to fulfill the need of the company. The aim was to have experience management issues that occur when dealing with "real" clients in "real" projects and was heavily focused on teamwork and problem solving. The environment was based on the learning principles of authenticity, self regulation and reflection. "Conference room for problem solving, bulletin boards, time management tools, etc.

Within this setting, two teams were selected for investigation. One team was highly successful in developing a quality product, and collaborated in a highly successful manner, while i was the team lead of the team. Another team experienced severe team problems, which caused it to become dysfunctional and had to be split. Data was collected on both these teams from focus group sessions, interviews and questionnaires that were recorded and transcribed for analysis.

My team could attain success with the help of the main determinants Meaning, Recognition and ownership in this way-

- Commitment to team success and shared goals

Participants understand their purpose and share their goals- the combination achieves mission.

Members shared a strong common goal

Members had strong shared values and beliefs.

Engaged in and satisfied with their work.

Creation of a team atmosphere that is informal, relaxed, comfortable and non-judgemental

Promote group cohesion

- Interdependence

Together the group can deliver more than the individuals who compromise it could do in isolation.

Team members build on the capabilities of their fellows- the combinations energized through synergy.

Team members must never be fully self-directed or completely independent

- Interpersonal skills

Members must be respectful and supportive of one another, and realistic in mutual expectations

High level of trust

Foster trust, confidence and commitment within the group.

: The team could have done differently to provide elements of meaning, recognition and ownership-

- Appropriate team composition-(1) Successful teams are a product of team composition so they must be able to maintain it.(2) The team must clarify member roles, relationship assignments and responsibilities. (3) The team must discuss the differences in what each member has to contribute to the work.

- Commitment to team process, leadership and accountability- (1) The team must tolerate of ambiguity, uncertainty and seeming lack of structure. (2) The team must install approaches that are goal-directed, divide labour fairly among the members and synchronize efforts. (3) Accepting individual accountability/personal responsibility. (4) Members subscribe to distributed leadership (4) Decisions are made by consensus (5) Seek best practice from other teams and other parts of the organizations (6) Be open to change, innovation and creative, joint problem solving (7) Perform post-project analyses to find out what worked and what didn't.
