Given that the atmosphere has a mass of 5.1x1018 kg and the mole fraction of methane is 1.8 ppm(V) in the atmosphere the gas-phase reaction with OH. radicals (hydroxyl radicals) is the mechanism for removal of methane from the atmosphere. The first order rate coefficient for methane reaction from the atmosphere is 0.1 yr-1. Emissions from the surface of the earth is the source of methane to the atmosphere.

a.) What is the mass of methane in the atmosphere?

b.) Using a mass balance, what is the expected emission rate in grams/year of methane to maintain a constant concentration of 1.8 ppm(V)?

c.) Methane concentrations are actually increasing by about 0.6% mass percent per year. Estimate the actual emission rate of methane in grams/year needed to both replace reacted methane and to increase the concentration in the atmosphere.

To meet the grand challenge of climate change and reduce the rate of warming of the atmosphere we must begin to remove major sources of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. One major greenhouse gas is methane. A major source of methane emissions are cows. There are approximately 1.4 billion cows (compare that to 7 billion people). Each cow emits approximately 120 kg/year of methane (CH4) Assume a cow’s stomach is 49 gallons in volume and the concentration in the stomach...

The world burns approximately 3.8×1012 kg of fossil fuel per year. Part A: Use the combustion of octane as the representative reaction and determine the mass of carbon dioxide (the most significant greenhouse gas) formed per year. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. Part B: The current concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is approximately 380 ppm (by volume). By what percentage does the concentration increase each year due to fossil fuel combustion?...

Please summarise below in a concise way. Alternative energy is studied as a result of the increasing costs of energy, the harm that fossil fuel may be costing the planet and the fact the energy demand is going up and the supply of fossil fuels may be going down. Energy and economic growth have always been going up, the more energy we consume, the more wealth we create as seen in the GDP of developed nations such as the USA,...
