We know that,

To draw conclusions about populations from samples, we must use inferential statistics, to enable us to determine a population’s characteristics by directly observing only a portion (or sample) of the population. Hence,

In order to one can get idea, "how the sample in the study is selected or which sampling method is used for selecting sample". Hence, It is necessary to describing the sample used in a study.
