Answer #1

A fecal occult blood test is used to check the stool sample for hidden blood. A positive fecal occult test indicates the presence of blood in the stool. Then, the physician has to find out the reason for bleeding through different tests. For doing the FOBT, usually, three samples of stools are collected from consecutive days. The test can be performed in two ways; chemical and immunologic.

For chemical testing, a solution containing the chemical guaiac and an oxidizing chemical is used to find out the blood presence. For immunologic testing, a sample of stool is mixed with a solution that contains an antibody to the globin. Then the antibody is mixed with a small amount of gold. If there is a presence of blood in the stool, then a solution with visible lines will appear on the test strip.
