Experiment RESISTANCE IN COMBINATION PURPOSE: To study series, parallel, and series.parallel combinations of resistors. EQUIPMENTThe experiment board and accompanying bundle of connecting wires. PROCEDURE: 1. Resistors in series: Connect the circuit shown in Fig. 1. Using circuit theory (Ohms Law in conjunction with the predicted procedure for combining resistors in series), calculate the expected current in or through the three resistors in series and the expected voltage across each of the three resistors. After the instructor has approved your connections, close the switch and measure and record the current. Take the voltmeter and measure and record the voltage acrosscach resistor and across the combination of resistors. Calculate the percent difference between the various calculated and measured values. 2. Resistors in parallel: Connect the circuit shown in Fig. 2. Using circuit theory, calculate the expected total current, the expected current through each individual resistor, and the expected voltage across each individual resistor. After the instructor has approved your connections, close the switch and measure and record the total current. Remove the ammeter from its position shown in Fig. 2 and place it properly into position to record the branch current through the 66-ohm resistor. Record this branch current. Similarly, measure and record the branch currents through the 90 ohm and IIS-ohm resistors. With the voltmeter measure the voltage across each parallel resistor. Series-Parallel Circuit No. 1: Connect the circuit shown in Fig. 3. Calculate the expected total current, the expected voltage across the parallel branch and the expected voltage across the single series resistor. After the instructor has approved your connections, close the switch and measure and record the total current. With the voltmeter, measure and record the voltage across the parallel branch. Measure and record the voltage across the series resistor. Calculate the percent difference between the several expected quantities and the corresponding measured quantities. 4. Series-Parallel Circuit No. 2: Connect the circuit shown in Fig. 4. Calculate the expected total current. After the instructor has approved your connections, close the switch and measure and record the total current. Calculate the percent difference between the expected current and the measured current.
